Three days: the default plan

Days one, two and three stay in connected areas, so the plan leaves time for the places themselves. Arrival and departure days are extra: shorten a day instead of crossing the city to catch up.

  1. Day 1: Anne Frank House, the canal ring and a short canal cruise.
  2. Day 2: Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Vondelpark.
  3. Day 3: Jordaan, the Begijnhof and Amsterdam Noord by ferry and metro.
  4. Book timed entries before fixing the order; schedule the Anne Frank House first.
  5. Keep an evening open for weather, a market or a second canal walk.

Three days: €100 for the charted tickets and local transport, excluding Anne Frank House admission.

Prices checked 17 Sep 2026 · per person, tickets and transport, excluding accommodation

Day 1: canal ring and Anne Frank House

Day one explains Amsterdam through the canal ring and the Anne Frank House. The house needs a timed ticket; build the walk around that fixed appointment.

  1. Morning: walk the Prinsengracht and Westerkerk area before your Anne Frank House entry time.
  2. Visit the Anne Frank House at the booked time and keep the subject matter unhurried.
  3. Walk east through the Nine Streets and across the canal ring towards Dam Square.
  4. Late afternoon: continue the ring on foot, leaving any paid cruise for a separate choice.
  5. Dinner in the Jordaan keeps the return route short.

Good to know

  • Anne Frank House tickets are released online on a fixed schedule and commonly sell out; this page explains the planning but does not sell house admission.
  • The canal ring is a UNESCO listed 17th-century planning ensemble; a boat shows its connected layout.
  • A cruise is a choice, not a requirement: the same canals remain free to walk.

On your own

Plan the timed house entry, then walk the ring; add a cruise only when seeing the layout from water helps.

With a guide

A guided Anne Frank history walk can add context, but it does not replace the separate house entry.

Day 1: €6.80 for the canal walk and local transport; Anne Frank House admission is excluded.

Day 2: Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Vondelpark

Day two stays around Museumplein. Choose one major collection in the morning, the other after lunch, and use Vondelpark as the reset between them.

  1. Morning: start at the Rijksmuseum with its booked entry time and choose a short highlights route.
  2. Walk across Museumplein to the Van Gogh Museum; use its separate timed entry.
  3. Take a break in Vondelpark behind the museums rather than adding a third collection.
  4. If one museum matters more, give it the longer slot and leave the other for a future visit.
  5. Take the included canal cruise after both museums, then return for dinner.

Good to know

  • Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum use separate tickets and timed planning.
  • Vondelpark is free and directly behind Museumplein, so it creates breathing room without another booking.
  • The Rijksmuseum and canal cruise combo is an optional paid format; it does not replace the Van Gogh Museum entry.

On your own

Book both museums, choose two or three galleries in each, and keep Vondelpark free as the buffer.

With a guide

A guided museum route helps when the collections feel too large; it cannot replace the timed tickets.

Day 2: about €85 per person in tickets and local transport.

Day 3: Jordaan, Begijnhof and Amsterdam Noord

Day three changes pace: the Jordaan and Begijnhof are neighbourhood walks, while Noord adds open space across the IJ. This is the day to leave flexible.

  1. Morning: walk the Jordaan from the Westerkerk towards the quiet hofjes and the Noordermarkt area.
  2. Continue to the Begijnhof for a brief courtyard visit; keep voices low because it remains residential.
  3. Cross by the free GVB ferry from Centraal Station to Amsterdam Noord.
  4. Choose the A’DAM lookout area or a waterfront walk, then return by ferry before dinner.
  5. Use the evening for a final canal stroll or the market you missed.

Good to know

  • The Jordaan is best understood street by street; there is no single ticketed highlight.
  • The Centraal–Noord ferry is free for pedestrians and bicycles.
  • Noord adds space and a different view of the city, but it is the first part to cut on a two-day visit.

On your own

This day is the strongest self-guided choice: walks, hofjes and the ferry are easy to pace yourself.

With a guide

A neighbourhood guide helps with hidden courtyards and history; pay only if that context matters to you.

Amsterdam canal cruises

Day 3: about €6.80 per person in tickets and local transport.

Prices checked 17 Sep 2026 · per person, tickets and transport, excluding accommodation

If you have two days

Keep the canal ring and Museum Quarter. They answer the city’s two strongest first-visit questions; Jordaan and Noord are the clean cut.

  1. Day 1: Anne Frank House and canal ring, with the cruise only if time remains.
  2. Day 2: Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, separated by Vondelpark.
  3. Drop Noord, Begijnhof and the longer Jordaan walk rather than rushing them into museum time.

If you have a fourth day

Use day four for the experience your first three days left out, instead of adding another central museum.

Good to know

  • Choose Keukenhof only within its seasonal opening period and check the current dates before booking.
  • Choose Zaanse Schans for a year-round windmill and craft village day.
  • Choose a slower food or market day in De Pijp if you prefer city time to another excursion.

On your own

Jordaan, De Pijp and the canal ring are straightforward walks; seasonal gardens need their own date check.

With a guide

A guided windmill or garden day earns its cost when transfers and timing matter more than independent pacing.

Facts that shape the trip

The plan works because the fixed appointments sit inside short walking loops. Check closures before assigning weekdays, then use the matrix to keep the order intact.

Good to know

  • GVB single fares are distance based; contactless pay as you go keeps this short itinerary simple.
  • Anne Frank House, Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum each publish their own entry rules and timed availability.
  • Amsterdam weather is mild and changeable; keep one flexible indoor or outdoor block each day.

Where a guided tour earns its money, and where it does not

Pay for a guide when a museum route, canal history or a day-trip transfer solves a real planning problem. Walk the Jordaan, Begijnhof, Vondelpark and Noord yourself first.

Mubboo compares flights and tours and may earn a commission when a traveller uses a partner link. Booking and payment happen with the provider.

Questions people ask

Which attraction should I book first?

Book the Anne Frank House first because its timed tickets are released on a fixed schedule. Build the canal-ring day around that appointment.

Can I do both major Museumplein museums in one day?

Yes, if you book both slots and choose a short route in each. Vondelpark is the useful break between them.

Should I add Amsterdam Noord on a two-day visit?

No. Keep the canal ring and Museum Quarter, then save Noord and the Jordaan for a longer stay.

Is a canal cruise essential?

No. Walking is free and flexible. A cruise earns its place when you want to understand the canal ring as one connected plan.
