A free day, in order

This route strings four free experiences into one south-to-north route, with the Rijksmuseum gardens as the seasonal first stop. The Archives Treasury sets the opening-hours anchor; the canal ring and ferry keep the rest flexible.

  1. Summer morning: enter the Rijksmuseum gardens when open, then walk north towards the canal ring.
  2. Visit the Amsterdam City Archives Treasury during its published free hours.
  3. Walk through the canal ring towards Centraal Station, using bridges and quays as the view.
  4. Take the free F3 ferry to Buiksloterweg or F4 to NDSM, then return when ready.
  5. If the gardens are closed for the season, start with the Archives and keep the whole route free.

On your own

This is the right route to walk yourself: every stop is free, and the Treasury and gardens both have opening windows.

With a guide

A guided canal walk adds context, but it changes a free day into a paid one; keep the ring self-guided first.

Parks, gardens and the canal ring

The canal ring is Amsterdam’s best free landmark because its value comes from connected streets, bridges and house fronts. Add the Rijksmuseum gardens only during their summer opening period.

Good to know

  • Rijksmuseum gardens: free during the museum’s summer opening period; check the current access window before visiting.
  • Canal ring: walk the Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht, then cut through the Nine Streets.
  • Vondelpark: use it as a free Museum Quarter break when the gardens are closed or the weather is clear.

On your own

Walk the ring and parks at your own pace; they need no timed ticket.

With a guide

Choose a guide only when canal history is the product you want; the views remain free either way.

Free water and city views

The IJ ferries give you a genuine water crossing without a ticket. Use them for a view and a change of pace, then return to the canal ring on foot.

  1. From Centraal Station, follow signs for the F3 Buiksloterweg ferry or F4 NDSM ferry.
  2. Board on foot or with a bicycle; the F1–F7 passenger ferries are free.
  3. Stay on the far bank for a short waterfront walk, then return on the next suitable crossing.
  4. Choose a paid cruise only if a narrated route or longer canal view matters more than the budget.

On your own

Take F3 or F4 for a free IJ crossing and views across the water.

With a guide

A canal cruise earns its place for narration and a fixed route, not because the free ferry is inaccessible.

Free museum windows

Amsterdam has useful free museum spaces, but each has a different rule. Treat the Archives Treasury and NEMO Rooftop Square as separate windows, not all-day museum substitutes.

Good to know

  • Amsterdam City Archives Treasury: free Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 to 17:00 and Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 to 17:00.
  • NEMO Science Museum Rooftop Square: free Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:30; it is a roof terrace, not the paid exhibition floors.
  • Rijksmuseum gardens: free only during the summer opening period; check the current access window before visiting.

Nearly free, and worth it

Use walking and the free ferries first. A GVB ride is the small paid choice that saves time when weather, luggage or a long cross-town gap changes the calculation.

Good to know

  • GVB’s 1-hour ticket is €3.40 and its day ticket is €10, checked 17 September 2026.
  • The F1–F7 IJ ferries remain free, so do not buy a ticket for the crossing itself.
  • Our call: pay for a single GVB hop when it protects time for a free Treasury or garden window.

On your own

Walk the core and use the free ferry; buy one GVB ticket only when the saved time protects a free-hour booking.

With a guide

A guide is a different purchase: it buys interpretation, while transit only buys movement.

Free versus paid: our verdicts

Free access wins when the place itself is the view. Pay when a booked product adds access, a fixed route or explanation that the free version cannot provide.

On your own

Choose the canal ring, Archives Treasury, parks and IJ ferry when flexibility and budget are the priority.

With a guide

Choose a canal cruise when narration and a water-level route are worth paying for; keep the ferry as the free comparison.

When paying is worth it

Pay when the paid experience changes what you can understand or access. A canal cruise is the clearest upgrade from this free day because it connects the ring from the water.

Good to know

  • Pay for a canal cruise when weather is poor, walking time is limited or you want a narrated route.
  • Keep the Archives Treasury, parks, canal streets and IJ ferry free; a paid product adds little to those views.
  • Mubboo sells canal cruise options, with current availability and inclusions shown when you compare them.

Where paying is worth it, and where it is not

Keep the route free when the attraction is a street, park, archive window or public ferry. Pay for a canal cruise when the route, narration and water-level perspective solve the day’s decision.

Mubboo compares flights and tours and may earn a commission when a traveller uses a partner link. Booking and payment happen with the provider.

Questions people ask

Are the Rijksmuseum gardens free all year?

No. The museum’s practical information says the gardens are free during the summer opening period. Check the current window before making them the first stop.

Which Amsterdam ferry is free?

The F1–F7 IJ ferries are free for pedestrians and bicycles. F3 crosses to Buiksloterweg and F4 to NDSM from the Central Station side.

What is the best free museum option?

The Archives Treasury has the clearest free indoor window. NEMO Rooftop Square is another free view, but it is a roof terrace rather than the paid exhibition.

Is a paid canal cruise worth it?

Only when narration, a fixed route or a water-level view matters more than keeping the day free. The canal ring and ferry already provide free water views.
