A free day, in order
This free day runs from the old port to the sea and ends at the one stop that charges. The city-centre stops sit close together; the Grand Mosque is the long ride.
- Start early at the Fish Souk in Mina Zayed, where fishermen land their catch every morning; the Fruit and Vegetable Souk is across the road.
- Walk the grounds of Qasr Al Hosn from 9am, Saturday to Thursday, or from 2pm on Friday. The House of Artisans and Cultural Foundation are free too.
- Spend the late afternoon on the public stretch of Corniche Beach and the waterfront path; a lifeguard is on duty until sunset.
- Take a taxi or bus to the Grand Mosque for the free 5pm cultural tour, which lasts under an hour. The mosque itself charges entry.
The Corniche and its beach

Corniche Road runs eight kilometres of waterfront with separate walking and cycling paths. Entry to the public beach is free; the gated sections charge.
Good to know
- Public beach stretch: free to enter, with a lifeguard on duty until sunset.
- Gated family and singles sections: AED 10 for adults and AED 5 for children; children under five enter free.
- Yas Beach is free only to Yas Plaza hotel guests. Other visitors pay for a day pass: AED 80 Monday to Thursday, AED 150 Friday to Sunday.
Old Abu Dhabi: Qasr Al Hosn and the markets
Qasr Al Hosn’s House of Artisans, Cultural Foundation and landscape are free to enter. Only the fort itself needs a ticket.

The Grand Mosque charges entry, but its guided cultural tour is free. Tours take under an hour and run in English and Arabic.
See or book a half-day city tour
Good to know
- Entry fee: AED 10 for visitors from outside the UAE, AED 5 for Emirates ID holders and AED 8 through tour operators.
- Free tours start at 11am, 1pm and 5pm; on Friday only at 11am and 5pm.
- In Ramadan the tours run at 11am and 1pm from Saturday to Thursday, and not on Friday.
- Visitors book an online access pass ahead of the visit; our Abu Dhabi guide covers the dress code.
On your own
Pay the entry fee, join the free tour, and make your own way there by taxi or bus.
With a guide
Adds hotel pickup and a four-hour route with other stops. The free tour already covers the mosque itself.
Nearly free, and worth it
Getting around costs less than getting in. City buses charge a small flat boarding fare, and a free shuttle links the islands.
Good to know
- City bus: AED 2 to board plus 5 fils a kilometre, capped at AED 5 a journey; children aged 10 and under ride free.
- Fares are paid by tapping a Hafilat card. The anonymous card costs AED 10, and a transfer within 60 minutes adds no second boarding fee.
- Abu Dhabi Link, the on-demand bus on Yas and Saadiyat islands, costs AED 2 a boarding on the same card, from 6am to 11pm.
- The Experience Abu Dhabi Shuttle Bus is free and runs eight routes linking Yas, Jubail, Saadiyat, the city centre and the Grand Canal.
| Item | AED per adult |
|---|---|
| Grand Mosque entry, visitor from abroad | AED 10 |
| Corniche Beach gated section, adult | AED 10 |
| City bus, boarding fare | AED 2 |
| Abu Dhabi Link, per boarding | AED 2 |
Free versus paid: our verdicts
Four free-versus-paid calls come up on an Abu Dhabi budget. In each, the free version already gives you the sight; the paid one adds a route, a seat or a view from the water.
See or book a Corniche boat tour
| Option | Our verdict |
|---|---|
| Corniche public beach, versus a Yas Beach day pass | The Corniche costs nothing. A day pass buys a towel, lounger and parasol, so go to Yas for the facilities. |
| The free mosque tour, versus a paid city tour | The free tour covers the mosque. Pay for a city tour only for the pickup and the other stops. |
| Qasr Al Hosn’s free grounds, versus the fort ticket | The grounds give you the setting for nothing. The ticket is what opens the fort itself. |
| A Corniche walk, versus a Corniche boat tour | The walk shows the skyline for nothing. A 60-minute boat adds the view from the water, Emirates Palace and Lulu Island. |
When paying is worth it: from AED 30.74
Pay where free stops. That means inside the fort at Qasr Al Hosn, or when you want a route across the city rather than a single stop.

Questions people ask
Is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque free?
Entry is not free for most visitors: the mosque charges a fee, lower for Emirates ID holders. The guided cultural tour inside is free, and it runs in English and Arabic.
Is Corniche Beach free?
The public stretch is free to enter. The gated family and singles sections charge, with a lower rate for children and free entry for children under five.
Is Qasr Al Hosn free?
Its grounds, the House of Artisans and the Cultural Foundation are free to enter. The fort itself needs a ticket, and we sell one with free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead.
Is there a free bus for tourists in Abu Dhabi?
Yes. The Experience Abu Dhabi Shuttle Bus is free on eight routes joining Yas, Jubail, Saadiyat, the city centre and the Grand Canal. Ordinary city buses charge a small boarding fare.
Is Yas Beach free?
Only for guests of the Yas Plaza hotels, who collect a voucher from their hotel. Everyone else pays for a day pass, which costs more from Friday to Sunday.
Is a paid tour worth it if I only want the mosque?
Not for the mosque itself, because the free cultural tour covers it. A paid tour earns its price when you want hotel pickup and other stops in one route.
